You’ve probably heard a lot of talk about the golf swing plane. Well what the heck is it and why do I need to worry about a swing plane? The simple answer is, the golf swing plane is the path that the club travels on the backswing and downswing in relation to the angle of your shaft at address. There is a one plane golf swing and a two plane golf swing to choose from.
If this sounds complicated don’t worry. I will break down the swing plane into simple terms and explain why it is such an important part of the golf swing. Also, I will show you some excellent golf swing plane drills.
The thing you need to know about the golf swing plane is that the more consistently you repeat your swing plane the more consistent your ball striking becomes.
Here are a few Swing Plane Tips:
- As the club goes back and up on the backswing have the butt end of the club facing a line that is drawn straight back from the golf ball
- Maintain your spine angle as this will keep your swing plane more consistent – feel like you are sitting down during the swing
- As you start the downswing return the club on the same path as the backswing…Feel like you have a one plane swing
- Maintain a consistent head position throughout the swing
- Work on excellent balance during the entire swing
The swing plane is the path your club travels when you swing. Why is this such a big deal …well… geometry?
The main reason the average golfer is average is because he or she doesn’t maintain the correct swing plane, and the ability to keep the swing on the proper plane is the main difference between the low handicap golfer and the high handicapper.
Well, it’s all true. And if you’re not swinging on-plane, that’s probably the reason you’re hitting all those fats and thins.
Worse still, it’s why you can’t put all your power into your shots.
