This will eliminate any swaying off the ball. To initiate the downswing, turn your pocket back towards the ball. Finally, to finish the swing, keep turning your right pocket to the left to continue the club on an inside path.

I watched a Nick Faldo Lesson on the Golf Channel this week. He really brought up a wonderful swing key about weight transfer and moving to the left side. First of all, to alleviate the outside over-the-top move make sure to complete your backswing. Secondly, keep your transition from backswing to downswing very smooth. Thirdly, kick your left hip toward the target to start the downswing (a nice little kick not an aggressive thrust). Now here’s the key – focus on creating separation between your chin and left shoulder. This secret move will set the club on the proper inside swing path and alleviate any over-the-top move. The result; you will eliminate the week fade and increase accuracy and distance.

I was working on my chipping the other day and stumbled upon one of my old swing keys. It really got me hitting solid and consistent chips. One of the most common chipping mistakes I see is lifting up and scooping the ball at impact. This can lead to the so-called chilly dip. A repeatable chipping stroke requires a downward blow at impact. How do you actually accomplish this with your stroke? The next time you are practicing your chipping focus on hitting down on the ball with the shaft of the club. Don’t think about the clubhead, hands or wrists during the stroke. In doing so, your focus will turn away from the result and towards your goal of hitting down on the golf ball. Remember, keep a steady head and make sure your hands stay in front of the clubhead throughout the stroke. Also, don’t be afraid of using a small forward press too start the club back. Use this technique and you will be saving par before you know it.

The key to making solid contact with a golf ball is to have excellent footwork. The tendency for most golfers is to hit the ground behind the ball instead of catching the ball first. To insure solid contact with the ball, it is an absolute must to know where your swing bottoms out. A great way to get the feel for this is to simply take some practice swings and just brush the grass. Take note of where the club makes its first contact with the ground. This spot is where your swing actually bottoms out. It’s difficult to think about where your feet are during the swing, therefore, concentrate on your finish position. Make sure you are completely up on your right toe with the bottom of your shoe facing away from the target. The right toe serves only as balancing point. If you achieve this foot position, the bottom of the swing arc will move forward and you will start making better contact with the golf ball.

Would you like to impress the other members of your foursome with your shot from a plugged lie in the bunker? The buried lie from the lip of a bunker is a shot that is feared by many golfers. It can be a daunting shot if you are not equipped with proper swing mechanics.

We have all faced this shot before when our iron shot comes up short and plugs in the face of a bunker. A bunker lip area usually contains softer sand because it is a much lower traffic area. This bunker shot for many players can take more then one effort to reach the putting surface. I know this lie looks scary, but it is not as difficult as might think.

Here is the technique I use, to consistently hit my shot onto the green in only one try. Sometimes, I get the sand shot close enough to one putt and get a sandy.

First, start with the most secure stance possible so you don’t slip during the swing

Secondly, as you set up close the face of your sand wedge. A specific shot may call for a different wedge based on the distance to the pin and height of the lip.Your wedge should face substantially left with a very closed angle. Make sure you set your stance parallel to the target line.

Finally, cock your wrists completely in the backswing, and drive the club into the sand just behind the ball. Use a significant amount of clubhead speed and hit the shot with as much force as you can generate. Don’t ease up at impact your you will leave the ball in the bunker.

As a result of using a closed clubface, the toe of the club will enter the sand first, and then square up as the pressure of the sand increases. This will cause the sand wedge to propel into the ball and produce an upward trajectory and a large amount of displaced sand. Consequently, the ball will come out like a knuckleball.

As with all shots, make sure you practice this bunker shot before you take it to the course. Once you are comfortable with the correct technique, you will shave a few strokes off your score and impress the heck out of your foursome. Remember, don’t be upset when your ball lands in a greenside bunker. Turn your focus to these techniques and have confidence in your ability to execute the shot.

Set up with your weight on the front foot and your hands in front of the ball. Once you’ve set your hand position maintain it throughout the stroke. Use no wrist break for this chip shot. Take the club back in one piece and regulate your distance by the length of your follow-through. Make sure you minimize any body motion and do not lift up during the shot. Finally, use light grip pressure and keep your hands leading the clubhead at all times.

There are as many golf swings in the world as there are golf tips. What golf tip can help every golfer improve their golf score? The answer is maintaining balance during the entire golf swing. More often then not, this is my primary swing thought. Whenever my timing does get off, I notice my balance during the swing becomes inconsistent. Disregard all other golf swing tips and focus on making an 80% golf swing. Never swing any harder than what allows you to stay in balance during the entire swing. Balance, Balance, Balance.

Have you ever wondered why your golf swing or putting stroke seem to change from day to day? Well it’s not your swing or stroke, it is the amount of tension you have in your forearms. I watched the 1983 Jack Nicklaus video “Golf My Way” the other day and it is amazing how basics in the golf swing never change over time. Jack talked about having only one golf swing and maintaining tension free forearms throughout the golf swing. He felt that this was the best way to consistently hit solid golf shots. This idea of soft forearms in the golf swing has always been one of my swing keys. When I’m under pressure and need to execute a tough shot I always focus on keeping the tension out of my forearms throughout the entire swing. This helps me make better contact and it’s surprising how far the ball travels when you maintain soft forearms. Try it the next time you play of practice.

Do you marvel at the number of putts the pros make every time you watch a golf tournament on television? While the pros use different putters, and have different setups and putting methods, they have one thing in common: They release the toe of the putter down the target line. To get the correct feeling for the stroke, feel the toe squaring the face of the putter at impact and then releasing down the target line. You definitely want to have a one piece stroke (move the putter with your arms and shoulders) and feel like the toe opens slightly on the backstroke, squares the face at impact and then releases straight down your target line. There are many training aids such as the Inside Down the Line system that can help you groove your putting stroke.

Grip down on the club, keep your body and hands ahead of the ball as you make contact, feel as though your lower body is fairly still, and stay on top of the golf ball.

Professional golfers do the opposite and apply even more force which gives them a more stable base in their golf swing. Next time you practice, focus on maintaining and even increasing the force you apply to the ground throughout the swing. A more solid base (foot and ground contact) will help you hit more consistent golf shots.

A couple weeks ago I gave a tip on improving your putting stroke by accelerating your putter before it gets to the ball. Guess what? This same technique applies to the chip shot. Most chilly dips are the result of decelerating the clubhead before you make contact with the ball. Focus on accelerating the club in your forward stroke before you make contact with the ball. This will make you more aggressive and rid you of the dreaded chilly dip. Also, remember to keep your head in a consistent position throughout the stroke.
