Why do PGA tour players make a golf bunker shot look so simple and effortless, while the average golfer dreads the thought of even being in a bunker? Golf professionals and low handicap amateurs rely on their bunker play to save shots. They would rather play from the sand than be in long rough around the green.
Bunker play is not as difficult as you think. Once you have confidence in your sand shots you won’t be afraid to shoot directly at tucked pins behind bunkers. Just a few good golf bunker tips will shave strokes off your score and take away the anxiety you feel when a bunker comes into play.
I’m want to show you how to play sand shots and thereby help you improve your bunker play. Before you know it, you will be hitting your bunker shots like a professional. No longer will you feel that it’s better to be in long rough around the green then in a bunker. You will quit wasting strokes, stop leaving your first shot in the bunker, and begin to save par from any bunker on the golf course.
Being a good bunker player will allow you to shoot at difficult pin positions because you will no longer be afraid of leaving your approach shot in the bunker.
Golfers who are not confident with their sand play, quite often decelerate and stop their follow-through after impact. The result is a weak shot that takes too much sand and fails to propel the ball out of the bunker. The first thing to realize is that the club does not advance the ball from the bunker. Rather, the golf ball is advanced by the club making contact with the sand and the sand displacing the ball. Be confident and take a long aggressive stroke, and be sure to finish your swing. The further you want the ball to carry the longer your swing needs to be.
Start by playing your bunker shots off your left heel, open the clubface, keep your knees flexed and pretend their is a tee under the ball. Forget about hitting 1,2 or 3 inches behind the ball. Just clip the imaginary tee under the ball. Stay down on your shot by keeping your knees flexed throughout the stroke. Grip the club lightly and keep your head steady through impact. Do not try to lift the ball out of the bunker. Make a solid confident swing and let the sand carry the ball to the target. Remember, your goal is to get your first shot out and onto the green. Approach your bunker shots in this manner, and you’ll be surprised how your bunker play will improve.
Here are my Five Keys that I focus on whenever I have a bunker shot on the golf course:
- Pretend to clip an imaginary tee under the sand beneath the ball
- Maintain equal light grip pressure during the swing
- Keep a consistent knee flex through impact
- Maintain a steady head
- Return the shaft at impact to the same angle as address
